To celebrate the launch of the new SL Records website we're starting our very own singles club. Each month we'll be matching up two track, one track will be a 'lost classic' – a track that is either now out of print or demo that was never released – and the other a brand spanking new track from some up and coming young whippersnapper, both of which we'll make available to download absolutely free. We're casting our net far and wide and all the artists will be new to the SL fold. However for our first month we're keeping it close to home with two bands hailing from Edinburgh...
Vatican Shotgun Scare - Why Don't You?
A welcome re-airing from Edinburgh's late 80's punkers Vatican Shotgun Scare. Fronted by Fiona Watt VSS mixed the tones and angst of early Siouxsie with the angst and tones of the Fall, ending up with their own sound. Here you will find the song "Why Don't you?", an thunderous rollercoaster of song, recorded on glorious 6-track. Fiona's now playing bass in Lugibarugi and garagey riot-woman pop with Leather Tuscaderos, and sings world music in the Forest Café Community Choir. Robin from VSS plays in Ramones tribute band Carbona Not Glue. Fiona was involved with Edinburgh's Ladyfest Festival, contributing an article on her time in VSS to Ladyfest magazine “With These Red Lips”.
s/e/l/l/o/t/a/p/e - Plastic Bag
This'll be the first release for s/e/l/l/o/t/a/p/e, who were also involved with Edinburgh's Ladyfest, headlining the opening party. Their early songs have a very DIY post-punk feel, and they are now developing a more unique thought-provoking art-school experimental sound which can only be described as free-drone-post-it-no-wave with influences from The Fall, Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground etc. vikisellotape has been compared to Poly Styrene, Siouxsie Sioux and branded as Scotland's Mark.E.Smith!
Notorious for their killer live performances, not to be missed, which include making popcorn live on stage, and a touching tribute to the late Oliver Postgate at their recent gig at the Picturehouse supporting the Rezillos where vikisellotape sang along with one of the mice from the magical mechanical mouse-organ…not to mention vikisellotape's hotpants…
